Cheetham Road – back alley

Residents from Cheetham Road have contacted me about the poor state of the alley running behind their houses.

It sits over a main sewer and is collapsing in places – the alley is very uneven. Because it’s surfaced with sets the alley is a huge trip hazard and it’s where the residents have to put out their bins – many residents are elderly. The sinkage in the alley has even caused feeder pipes into the main sewer to shear off causing sewerage to seep up, damaging back yards and making a real mess.

This residents yard was ruined when the sewage pipe sheared.

The highways budget is really tight at the moment, but I’ve written to the engineer for the section asking for them to explore digging up the alley, backfilling it and then tarmac’ing the surface to prevent both tripping and future problems with the sewer. I’m not confident of quick progress, but it’s an issue that needs sorting out nonetheless.
