Swinton Town Centre Summit

I attended a meeting with ward councillors from Swinton and Pendlebury, the council leader and council officers yesterday to discuss how to address problems associated with Swinton Town centre. We looked at the effects of the recession on shops; the problems caused by the sell off of the car-park and the introduction of pay and display; and what was happening with the receivers who are

running the centre and are themselves in pretty dire straights. Most importantly we looked at ways to improve the centre; drive up trade and to help the shopkeepers.

This meeting was the start of a process which will hopefully involve retailers in developing a strategy and vision for the centre. The meeting was very productive and my only disappointment is that it’s taken so long to get here – Lib Dem councillors have been urging urgent action to save local shops for over two years but our calls have fallen on deaf ears. I hope it’s not too late.

I agree with your comments, but we have a start, i look forward with interest to the follow up meeting. I wonder how much more productive it would have been with representatives from the Centre. What do you feel about the lift centre, i for one have hope we get it,it would be a quick way of getting footfall.

I was originally sceptical of the concept of the Lift Centres – but I think the presence of one will help breathe some life into the town centre. It’s disappointing that after Labour made such a fuss of announcing its arrival that councillor Merry confessed at the meeting that the finances don’t stack up and so it won’t presently be coming.
