Labour ditches liberty
Three news stories that I’ve heard today have really hammered home the cumulative effects of Labour policy in the erosion of our democracy. Together they exemplify for me why the Labour party should not be trusted to run a country or be put in charge of protecting freedom, equality and the democratic values of transparency and accountability.
- The government has announced that an inquiry into the Iraq war will be held entirely behind closed doors. In secret. No blame will be apportioned as a result.
- A judge has become the first to make use of a Labour law enacted in 2003 that permits trial without jury. The problem of interference with the jury by criminals has been correctly identified; the solution of doing away with the jury in response it utterly nuts. It’s typical of Labour to spot a problem and then come up with a draconian liberty-crushing response that is worse than the problem they’ve identified. Note to Labour – the solution to a problem should cause less harm that the original problem.
- Lancashire County Council has been using anti-terror laws to spy on its cleaners and bus drivers in order to ensure people are working the right hours! Note – Lancashire County Council is now Tory controlled, but the powers were used while Labour was in control. Lots of councils have been using these powers to spy on all sorts of people – Lancashire is just one of a range of shocking examples.
Why on earth does it take an expenses scandal for people turn from Labour rather than the fact that they have no respect for freedom?

Hope you don’t mind an off-topic comment…
What do you reckon will happen with Hazel tonight?
Though she should be de-selected, I’ll be amazed if it actually happens.

The CLP lack the spine to deselect her -she’ll remain in power.

I’m not so sure, there might well be a lot more pressure from the grass roots than she thinks.
She’ll probably survive but it might be a close run thing.
